Experience the beauty of this region

Hawkes Bay Escape

Vintage Napier

All year round the Hawkes Bay is a wonderful destination to explore

We all know about the warm, temperate climate, the wine, and the stunning farmland but that only scratches the surface of this gorgeous region.

Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s Art Deco capital, rebuilt in the architectural styles of the time following the devastating 1931 earthquake.  We will uncover all the history of the region on a locally guided tour, view and dine at the exquisite Duart House, explore chocolate and honey delights and of course sample some fine wine

Other highlights include a fabulous 3 course meal at Mission Estate, a meet and greet with two local go-getters doing some amazing things using the ‘kiwi can do’ attitude, visit Oruawharo Homestead, climb Te mata Peak and enjoy all the fabulous food and wine this region has on offer.

Itinerary

Day 1

Whanganui - Napier

Depart the Whanganui Racecourse at 10am and travel over the saddle road making our way to Waipawa for a delightful lunch.

Waipawa is one of the oldest inland towns in NZ so we’ll make our way to the fascinating Settlers Museum for an informative guided tour before hitting the road and weaving our way into Hawkes Bay and stopping into Birdwoods Gallery and Sweet Shop. Admire the gorgeous gardens and sculptures and grab some sweet treats.

Napier

We’ll enjoy a light afternoon tea here before heading to our accommodation where you will have time to unpack your bag and relax a little before heading out for our first group dinner at one of the highly rated local restaurants.

Accommodation: Anchorage Motor Lodge

Day 2

Napier

A relaxed start to the day before heading into the Napier CBD and picking up a local guide who will inform us of all things Art Deco, Wine and the interesting history of Hawkes Bay. We travel around the area on our bus so just sit back, relax and enjoy the informative talk where many points of interest will be explained to us during the guided tour before we stop for a great  lunch.

This afternoon sees us visit the Silky Oak Chocolate Factory where we sample some of the scrumptious chocolate offerings and wander through the only comprehensive chocolate museum in the Southern Hemisphere.

Following this the treats just keep on coming as we make our way to Church Road Winery for a tasting and insight into the process of producing wine which is famous throughout the world.

Another fabulous group dinner is lined up this evening before resting our heads for the night.

Accommodation: Anchorage Motor Lodge

Day 3

Napier

A real treat for us today as we visit Duart House after another relaxing start to the day. Duart House was built in 1882 and boasts 3 acres of picturesque garden. We have a guided tour lined up and will also dine for lunch at this stunning location.

We then head out to Havelock North and visit Arataki Honey Centre where we are shown around this magnificent complex and are lucky enough to receive some honey that we can take home with us.

Following this we climb in the bus up to Te Mata Peak to soak in the fabulous views before heading over to meet one of ‘the boys’ close friends Mike Pickering. After buying 8 acres of Hawkes Bay land with nothing but a run down shed on the property, Mike and his lovely wife Loz have rejuvenated the land, upgraded their shed, built a tiny house to initially live in with their young daughter, and now Mike is self-building a high performance sustainable home for his family that will also operate completely off the grid. A truly inspiring couple that are happy to welcome us into their busy lives and show what can be achieved when you roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. Afternoon tea will be provided also.

After getting refreshed back at our accommodation we head out for our final group dinner at the magnificent Mission Estate, where we will enjoy a delicious evening meal in this elegantly restored historic building.

Accommodation: Anchorage Motor Lodge

Day 4

Napier - Home

We won’t be in a rush to leave the bay this morning and once packed up we’ll have a leisurely drive around to see any final bits and pieces of the area we may have missed before starting our journey home.

We break for a high tea lunch at the majestic Oruawharo  Homestead. This grand building has been around since 1879 and the owners Dianne and Peter Harris will be on hand to explain its history and show us around this idyllic location.

Then it’s homeward bound as we look to arrive home in the late afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Can you collect me from my door?

Yes, it would be our pleasure. We can arrange for you to be picked up and returned to your front door at the conclusion of any tour.

I have some dietary requirements?

Please just let us know in advance and we will sort everything for you. Chefs are used to all sorts now when it comes to diet so as long as we know - we’ll have you covered.

What kind of accommodation do we stay in?

Having a good night's rest after a day out touring is very important so we personally choose all of our accommodation. Generally, four star accommodation when available - with all the comforts you need for a relaxed night.

How active are your tours?

We are called Take it Easy for a reason as we like to do just that. Do as much or as little as you like - after all it's your holiday! However, there is walking and various activities on each tour that require various levels of fitness. Please check with us if you are unsure about anything and relax knowing that there's always another option for you if you would rather miss out on any activity. We always have a back up plan.

What types of transport do we use?

Our buses are quality touring coaches that are very comfortable and fully air conditioned. They range in size from 19-28 seats ensuring that we can easily access all those secret spots off the beaten track. All vehicles are regularly serviced as your safety is our priority.

Coaches and luggage trailers are always locked and secure but we recommended you take any valuables with you when staying overnight.

What happens if I have to cancel?

Cancellation charges do apply so again we recommend travel insurance. Our cancellation policy is clearly outlined for each tour so make sure you cast your eye over it and please feel free to ask any questions.

How about travel insurance?

We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. It just puts your mind at ease. Remember to make sure you are covered for and loss of personal possessions, sickness, accidents or travel delays. Feel free to ask us for any tips to make this quick and easy for you.
